• Use a Lake Country Home Builder Association Member
• Only hire a licensed and insured contractor
• Check your contractor's license status: www.dpor.state.va.us
• Obtain at least three bids
• Obtain three references
• Use a written contract
• Don't sign a contract until the terms are completely understood
• Make payments only as each phase of the work is complete
• Keep a payment record
• Don't make a final payment until there is job satisfaction
• Keep a file of all documents relating to the project
